Signs of Learning offers the following classes:

Parent child classes

Sign Language for Budding Babies

Sign Language for Budding Babies class hosted in a students home.

Sign Language for Budding Babies class hosted in a students home.

These classes are 6 week, 60 minute classes created for parents/caregivers and babies (6 months to 36 months). In a playful, language-rich, educational environment, parents, caregivers and children will build their American Sign Language (ASL) vocabulary through interactive games, songs, instruction and storytelling. Learn signs that will help you develop a system of communicating with your pre-verbal infant, and, if incorporated into your daily routines, will empower your child to express his/her needs and therefore significantly reduce frustration. Parents will also have the opportunity to connect on a deeper level with their child and build supportive relationships with other caregivers journeying down the road of signing. Deaf culture will also be discussed. Fee changes based on number of weeks of class, but a 6 week class costs $105. Check schedule and cost here.

Sing and Sign Playtime

Come practice the signs you and your child already know or learn new signs to go along with fun songs. This 30 minute class is designed to keep American Sign Language fun and entertaining. No previous signing experience is necessary. Come ready to sing and laugh and dance around.

*Fee varies at each site and is usually $65 for a 6 week class per parent/child couple; depends on class location. Sometimes the class is four or five weeks depending on the available space. Fees and number of classes are subject to change. Check schedule and cost here.

Elementary Age Classes

Introduction to Sign Language (K-5): These classes are 8 week, 45-55 minute classes created for children in Kindergarten - 5th Grade. Students will learn the basics of ASL in a fun, language-rich, educational environment. Classes will include songs, games, and various activities to make learning fun. Topics such as Deaf culture, basic greetings, the manual alphabet, colors, numbers, emotions, animals, and more may be discussed.

*Fee is $180 for a ten week class. Number of classes is flexible based on need, interest and availability.

Making Music Praying Twice

Music is a fun way to connect with your child. Join us for this fun, low-pressure, hands-on parent/child music course for our youngest music lovers (0-5 years of age). Children and parents use instruments, toys, and scarves to dance, chant, sing, play games, and pray together. Following class we hang out and get to know each other and eat goldfish. Some sign language is used, but the focus of the class is music, not signing. We pray at the beginning and end of each class and have a blast. Songs are a mix of Christian and secular songs! All are welcome!

Register: $57 for one child +$10 for additional children. CD also available for $12. Cost subject to change. You can register and order CD here: https://www.stfrancisraleigh.org/parent-child-classes-2/

Parent/caregiver and educator Classes

Parent Workshops

Parent workshops are designed to introduce parents and caregivers to the benefits of using ASL with pre-verbal infants and children. Designed for the parents on the go, this workshop will teach the same information as the 6 week classes but it will be condensed into one two or three hour session and will focus on teaching the parent in a classroom setting (babies are always welcome but the focus will be on teaching the parent). We will discuss the research supporting the SIGN with your BABY® method, helpful tools and techniques of teaching, and the best time to start signing. Over 50 signs will be introduced.

*Generally a three hour workshop is $45 per couple. Fees vary from site to site. For example UNC Hospital offers a subsidized 2 hour workshop for $15 per couple.

Educator/Early Intervention Workshops

Educator and Early Intervention workshops are designed to equip educators and early intervention specialists with the tools they need to incorporate ASL in the classroom or therapy setting. These workshops are interactive courses that introduce the concept of signing as an excellent way to augment existing curriculum or programs. Come and learn the joys and benefits of American Sign Language through the use of age-appropriate songs and games! Participants learn about the compelling research in this area, resources to keep them signing in their programs and tips on how to involve parents. Participants are provided with vocabulary specific to classroom and therapy use. Workshops can be designed to meet the budget and needs of educators and childhood development specialists.

*Fee to be decided based on length of program and/or number of people in attendance. $125 per hour minimum ($15 per hour per person). Discounts available to non profit organizations.

Free Presentations

Presentations offer a brief introduction to the benefits of signing with your baby (usually under an hour). Parents and Caregivers will have the opportunity to ask questions and to sign-up for future classes or workshops. To arrange a free presentation for your group please contact Signs of Learning.

*Fee is $0 - These presentations are normally free of charge.

Private Instruction

These in-home classes are designed to fit your needs, your goals, and your schedule. I can teach the pre-designed 6 week class to you and your family or we can design the class according to your goals. If you have a group or you'd like private instruction and would like to meet at your location, then you can host an in-home or on-site workshop. This is also a wonderful option for moms' clubs, playgroups, and childcare centers. To arrange an in-home or on-site workshop please contact me. I'd be glad to work with your family individually or with a group to assist you in acquiring an ASL vocabulary and implementing this vocabulary in your daily routines.

*Personal Instruction - $65 per hour per family (mom, dad, siblings, grandparents, nannies, included). An additional travel fee may be necessary.

*In-home 6 week class hosted by one family with four or more other participants (parent/child combos) - $105 per parent/child combo. The host family receives a discount.

There will be short times of stillness and silence to give them the opportunity to check in with their bodies, engage their senses, and notice what’s happening around them.  We will talk about the brain in an age-appropriate way so they can have a better understanding of what’s going on in their bodies, promoting a richer awareness.
